Norman Groves RIP

18 Oct 2019 by Steve Lesslie

It is with the utmost regret that I announce the death of Norman Groves.

Norman passed away in Broomfield hospital in the early hours of today. Norman was a stalwart of the game at International level, County level and Group level. He joined Witham Bowls Club in 1959. In 1968 he won the National EBA Singles, The Eastern Counties Singles, and the Essex County Singles. He represented England from 1969 to 1974.He was a County Coach from 1982 until 1987. He was the Essex Middleton Cup Manager from 1991 to 1994 and again from 2004 until 2010.

He was for many years a Group 2 Selector. He was extremely supportive of the Group and encouraged all the players he came in contact with. Even after standing down as a Selector he continued to attend the games, such was his keen interest in the Group. He leaves behind a legacy that will never be surpassed. We extend our deepest sympathy to his widow Janet and son Kevin.

The funeral will be at Chelmsford Cemetery and Crematorium, South Chapel, Writtle Road, CM1 3WQ on Thursday 31st October a t 12.30 pm.

Alex Wightman
Hon Group Secretary
